I Was Relentlessly Judged For ‘Baby-Wearing’ My Child With Special Needs

Gambar
"Wow," yet another elderly woman would say to me while I was shopping with my three kids, ages four and under. "You have your hands full." I was so used to hearing this, and would simply smile and nod in response. It certainly wasn't easy trying to cross every item off my grocery list with three young kids in tow, but we did it anyway out of necessity. As one of my kids got older, it became obvious that something was going on. There were the epic tantrums that came out of seemingly nowhere, the need to touch absolutely anything and everyone, and the constant crashing and falling on purpose. Running errands or even going on a playdate was becoming increasingly difficult and miserable for all of us. I decided one day, in desperation, to order a toddler carrier and started to wear my child as much as I could. I didn't anticipate that choosing to wear my toddler with special needs would result in a whole lot of judgement. Now, I'm not the type of mom who ask...

SW Indiana man gets 40-year sentence in toddler's death

Gambar
Updated 1:36 pm CDT, Tuesday, May 26, 2020 BOONVILLE, Ind. (AP) — A southwestern Indiana man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison in the neglect death of his girlfriend's 10-month-old son. A Warrick County judge sentenced Thaddious Rice of Newburgh on Friday to the maximum sentence for his conviction on a felony neglect of a dependent charge. But the judge ruled that Rice, 25, could not also be sentenced on a reckless homicide charge that a jury also convicted him of during his March trial. The judge found that doing so would be considered double jeopardy because both charges stemmed from the death of Jaxson Wheeler, said Warrick County Prosecutor Mike Perry. The 10-month-old boy die...

Coroner urges NHS chiefs to warn parents not to place cots near blind cords as toddler becomes 33rd to die since 2001

A coroner has urged NHS chiefs to warn parents to keep toddlers away from blind cords after a baby became the 33rd to die in such circumstances since 2001. One-year-old, Rifky Grossberger from Hackney in North London, passed away in July 2019 after she stood up in her cot and became entangled in a hanging cord.   Rifky's mother found her unresponsive child who passed away five days later in hospital from asphyxia and oxygen deprivation, Poplar Coroner's Court was told. The inquest heard that the child's parents were "unaware" of the lethal dangers of the metal blind cord. Senior coroner Mary Hassell wrote to NHS England's medical director Professor Stephen Powis, warning of a risk in future deaths unless action is taken and that "there is the potential to help parents, carers and their babies across the country." Professor Chris Whitty, the government's chief medical advisor and the Royal College of Nursing chief Dame Donna Kinnair al...

Have a Whiny Baby? Why Babies Whine and What You Can Do About It

Gambar
The whines of a baby or toddler can sound like nails on a chalkboard to parents. They can be incessant and sometimes infuriating, but it's important to realize that these high-pitched, singsong protests actually serve a purpose as a mode of communication. Understanding the causes of whining can help to mitigate the frustration you and your baby feel. So next time your little one starts to whimper or wail, take a moment to evaluate the situation. You may be able to stop the whining, solve the problem, and save your sanity. Here's what you need to know.Whining can be considered the transition between crying and verbal complaining. And while it may be grating on a parent's ears, it's an important step as a child learns to articulate specific...

She was fighting coronavirus and gave birth while in a coma. She met her baby five weeks later

Gambar
(CNN) — Alicia Kappers doesn't remember her contractions or her baby's first cries. Other than her newborn son, her only reminder of that day is the scar from her cesarean section. She was 31 weeks pregnant when her husband took her to a Cincinnati, Ohio, hospital in late March. She had a cough, fever and it was getting harder and harder to breathe. The novel coronavirus was putting a strain on her body and the 40-year-old mother would have to deliver her baby early while in a medically induced coma. Kappers and her husband dreamed of giving a sibling to their 3-year-old son Zayne. Conceiving had never been an easy task for them and a pandemic was about to make things even more difficult. She fought for her life on a ventilator From putting together a nursery for the baby to having to hunker down at home because of the virus, the life of this family of three was already changing. When her toddler first complained about fatigue and a fever in early March, Kapper...

Toddler Who Had Fetal Surgery For Spina Bifida Continues To Defy All Odds

Gambar
Even just ten years ago, it would have been considered somewhat of a medical anomaly for a baby with a severe case of spina bifida to be born with the function of their legs. Because up until recently, paralysis for spina bifida patients, at least to some degree, was almost a guarantee among those born with severe cases of the condition. But thanks to an experimental fetal surgery, infants like the now-21-month-old Ava Reyes have been given the opportunity to defy all odds, proving that what was once said to be impossible was really just the start of a lifetime full of possibilities. At just shy of two years old, the small, yet mighty Ava — who was diagnosed with the congenital defect during a 24-week anatomy scan — has already become one of the biggest success stories for a new type of fetal surgery that offers babies more mobility. Walking alongside her on this journey? Ava's mother, Erika Reyes, a fierce influencer in the spina bifida world, who uses her daughter's story to ...

Video Of Trump As Lying Toddler On 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' Will Make You Gasp

Gambar
Nobody can lie like a toddler, even when they're caught in the act. Well, almost nobody. Earlier this week, Jimmy Kimmel Live! did a little editing and doctored a viral video, putting Trump's face on a toddler and the president could perhaps give little ones a run for their money. On May 11, Jimmy Kimmel shared a hilariously horrifying doctored video during his monologue from his home. The original video that went viral in April features a toddler named Lily who got caught touching the dog's food. Her mother watched her do it and called her out, but Lily absolutely refused to admit she touched the food. She's vehement about it, yelling and arguing in baby talk the whole time. "Watching that kid deny something that she clearly did reminded me of someone," Kimmel says in his monologue, adding that his team "did doctor this video" on Trump's face edited over the toddler's. And the changes they made were... I almost can't even describe it. Ki...

Israeli toddler swallows 32 magnetic beads and lives to babble about it

Gambar
Doctors at Hadassah-Ein Kerem hospital removed 32 magnetic balls from a baby's stomach, saving his life. Earlier this week, a mother brought her one-and-a-half-year-old son into the emergency room due to a high fever and loss of appetite. The staff began examining the child, including screening him for the novel coronavirus. An x-ray of the lungs revealed an unexpected result: the child had lots of magnetic beads in his stomach.  "They tried to calm me down and tell me that they had seen this before," the child's mother recalled. "But they said the situation had to be dealt with immediately." Dr. Ze'ev Davidovic, a senior physician at Hadassah Pediatric Hospital, was called to the scene to perform an urgent endoscopic procedure and remove the magnets. Every moment they stayed inside him, the doctor said, endangered the boy's life. "This is not the first time we've seen babies, toddlers and even older children who have swallowed mag...

The New Viral Video Challenge Tests Your Baby’s Patience

Gambar
Over the past few weeks, a new viral video trend has hit Twitter called the "Fruit Snack Challenge." The hit, which first went viral about five days ago when a mom hit record, poured a package of fruit snacks into a bowl for her toddler and then walked away and told her not to have any of the fruit snacks until she got back. The video, which clocks in at over a minute, is absolutely adorable — not just because the toddler is super cute, but also because her tested patience is successful. The mom walks away and, alone, the little girl talks to herself about how she can't touch the fruit snacks, gives side-eyes towards the snacks, smells them, and asks herself, "Dada and mama, gone?" and "I must don't touch." Luckily, she prevails and gets to eat the fruit snacks. It is freaking adorable. The challenge, which then started to spread all over social media from regular kids who failed and from famous children who succeeded at the c...

People are going ape over a shocking video showing a monkey riding a tiny motor scooter trying to kidnap a toddler in Indonesia, grabbing the girl by her dress and dragging her along an alley. The wild monkey business unfolded Saturday in the East Java city of Surabaya and involved a traditional form of street entertainment known as topeng monyet, or masked monkey, according to Indonesia Expat. The pesky primate, accompanied by gamelan percussion music, is seen riding the tiny vehicle down Gang Mawar, a narrow residential street, before stopping by a wooden bench where a woman is sitting with a baby and two young children. The monkey hops off the bike and pulls the diapered girl in a yellow dress — dragging her several feet as onlookers yell at the handler. For one mother, that separation started the moment she delivered her daughter and continued for almost two months."It literally felt like I was going to die. It was really terrifying," said Anny Caruso. She was 31 weeks pregnant when she was diagnosed with COVID-19. Mild symptoms quickly got worse and she was hospitalized twice. Doctors told her they were concerned about her health and that of her baby."They needed to do an emergency C-section to get her out so I could recover.
