Toddler killed by reversing SUV in Etobicoke

A toddler was killed when he was hit by a reversing SUV in Etobicoke on Tuesday.

Toronto Police say the fatality occurred shortly after 5 p.m. at an apartment building near Richview and Scarlett Rds. — northwest of Jane St. and Eglinton Ave. W.

A 25-year-old man, driving a Pontiac Torrent, was parked out front of the building waiting to pick someone up, Det. Brett Moore, of Traffic Services, said Wednesday.

"At the same time, a two-year-old boy and his mother exited the building," he said. "The person the driver was waiting for exited through the same door and got into the waiting vehicle."

Moore said the driver then reversed and struck the toddler who was behind the SUV.
